A little practice with Muse
Free fiction-writing exercises on the ChapterMuse website. No account needed.
Updated
Visit Daily Writing Exercises and ask Muse for today's task. Everyone receives the same exercise. It changes at midnight in the UK, including the change between summer and winter time.
One task, one craft skill
The collection contains 480 original exercises across 12 types: character, dialogue, scenes, plot, worldbuilding, viewpoint, description, revision, tension, beginnings and endings, observation, and voice. The daily order is shuffled, with every exercise appearing once before a new cycle begins.
Each exercise has a focused challenge, an optional hint and a question to help you notice what worked. Its reading links lead to a relevant ChapterMuse field guide and an external craft resource. Use a character or scene from your own work, or make something up just for the exercise.
Make it your own
- The optional timer offers a short practice session. Pause or reset it whenever you like.
- Mark a task done and the timer gives way to a question about what worked. Completion is remembered in this browser, locally on your device, and is not synced to your account. Have another go resets it for the same exercise.
- Share a task to get a permanent link to that exercise. Past tasks stay available for another go.
- Your device’s reduced-motion setting is respected. You can also open the plain-text version below the daily task to read the prompt without the reveal animation.
Write in a notebook, ChapterMuse or any editor you enjoy. The daily page does not collect your writing.
Browse past tasks or explore the field guide for longer lessons.
